DOCG/DOP/DOC WINES

DO Designation of Origin – Reg. EC 1234/2007 art. 118

Reference market

Viticulturists/Winemakers/Intermediaries/Bottlers of wine subject to recognition

Reasons and benefits

  • It enables designation to be protected against any undue use, exploitation, usurpation, imitation or evocation, any false or misleading indications and other practices which may deceive the consumer as to the real origin of the product;
  • It encourages agricultural diversification;
  • It helps development of the rural economy and in particular that of less favoured or peripheral areas;
  • It meets market demand for quality products;
  • It improves the level of information to the consumer;
  • It guarantees, in relation to EU products of geographical origin, the same competitive conditions for all producers.

Key aspects

The whole production, processing and preparation process must take place in the defined geographical area. The intrinsic characteristics of DO wines depend, totally or in part, on the land of production, meaning not only the environment with its climatic and soil properties but also the human and sociological one.
